2008/09/25 We're Back.2008/09/19 Good ThingsThe Oaks outside our window are turning color.
We leave in the morning for California.
Bible study was really convicting this morning.
I'm co-writing a worship song that is up-tempo, (big stretch for me) and I actually really like it.
Comfortable pants.
Cold pizza.
My next blog will either be from Cali, or when I get home. ttfn!
2008/09/17 I'm a Sound Equipment Ignoramus, and I'm ProudI'm in charge of buying new monitors for the church. The money has been in the account since January, but because I fear being put in situations where I look stupid, and because I'm terrified of making people angry or disappointed with me, I haven't bought monitors.
In the last month or so, 2 of our monitors have blown, and another one works when it feels like it. We're down to two and a half monitors on the stage, and one in the pit.
I had no choice, which seems to be the best time for me to make a decision, lately.
It went pretty much like I thought it would go. The guy asked me a lot of questions. I said "um, what?" a lot, and "err, maybe", and then called my sound guy and made him talk to the salesman.
I came away from the situation with the resolution that owning my ignorance of sound equipment is really the only option. I am so dumb about it that I can't even fake it. And, if I learn about it, then that could be one more thing I'd end up running on a Sunday morning, which is is far worse to me than being perceived as dumb.
So there you have it. I'm a Sound Equipment Ignoramus, and I'm Proud. T-shirts available for purchase soon. 2008/09/11 From An Average AmericanWe've moved on from 9-11 as a nation. But, we moved on as those who have been forever changed. And may we never forget that day 7 years ago. never ever ever.
In the days following the towers falling, I wondered if I would ever feel safe again. I do feel safe, for the most part. For someone with children, that's a monumental thing. And, I realize there has been an incredibly high price that has been paid for people like me to feel safe after such a horrible tragedy. In this season of comfort, may I never forget to thank God for those who have paid and are still paying that price.
In the days following, I felt grateful and proud to be an American. I still do, despite the fact that we aren't perfect, and we haven't made perfect decisions in our response to 9-11. May I never forget how it felt when freedom was threatened. May my gratitude for the life I lead as an American be a sign that I won't forget what has happened over the past seven years.
In the years following, I began to doubt our involvement in Iraq. I still feel very conflicted about it. But I'm still proud of our leadership, and of our country, and of our soldiers. The yoke of leadership and of service to our country is a crushing one at times. May I pray before I have an opinion about the job they are doing. And then....pray some more. And then...pray even more.
There is no way for someone like me to understand the profound sadness of those who've lost loved ones because of 9-11 and the war. To the grieving, I am so sorry, and will keep praying for you, and for an end to this war. May I honor your loved ones by remembering to pray, and remembering to be grateful, and remembering to remember how it felt that horrible morning 7 years ago when the lives of every average American were changed forever. 2008/09/09 It's a Car, It's a Soap Creature, It's Lisa, With a Foamy MohawkI like going through automatic car washes. My girls hated it when they were little. I used to have to unbuckle their carseats, and put them on my lap when we went through, otherwise they would scream and cry the entire time. For me though, there's something satisfying about watching all those giant rotating rags and brushes scrub my car. It's a germaphobe's paradise, almost a theme park thrill ride for those who hate dirt....an insider's view of all the scrubbing and cleaning... on a giNORmous scale. I even like the sounds, and the darkness of it.
I also like mri machines, though. I've had four mri's in my life, and I've fallen asleep during three of them. I have wondered at times if a car wash took longer, whether or not I might fall asleep during one of them.
Today, I took the car through the wash. We were riding along merrily to the part where the giant strings of cloth descend and then procede to shimmy across the top of the car. Just as the cloth hit the windshield, and I was ensconced in darkness, the entire carwash stopped.
Sidenote:At that moment, I did not consider the feasibility of taking a nap
There I sat. It was totally silent, and pretty much totally dark. There were brushes close to me on the side, and I was covered from the top. After a few minutes, I started to wonder if I should figure out a way to get out. Knowing my luck, just as I crawled out the back hatch, the car wash would have started up again, and I would have had to make a run for it. People vacuuming their cars on the outside (with the vacuums from sheol...remember my post from THAT experience) would have been shrieking "Gladys...what is that monstrous sudsy thing coming out of the carwash?"
So, instead, I dialed a friend to tell her of my dilemma. Just as she answered, the carwash started up again. No drama, no thrill, no nap. All that resulted from the adventure was a clean car, a funny conversation with my friend,
and fodder for a blog entry.
2008/09/08 SERIOUSLYMario Kart is a blast. I'm sitting here watching my husband hit penguins on the ice track. I just sped through the mall, jumping fountains and going up the down escalator on a motorcycle.
Who needs a mid life crisis when there's Mario Kart? 2008/09/05 Out of the NumbnessI'm not going to get all political. If I did, I wouldn't blame any of you for thinking a guest blogger had shown up on the blog.
But I just have to say this:
For the first time this year, I'm excited to vote.
MarioKartitisI have a disease. It's called MarioKartitis. The only cure is to break the television, or the Wii. Looks like I'll have it forever. *sigh* 2008/09/03 I Love My Aunt JoWe are a family who loves words. My aunt Jo emailed me today to respond to my rapscallion entry. Here's what she said:
"I most certainly exalt you for your opulent panoply of sapient knowledge regarding vocabulary.
I would, however, admonish you for blatantly forcing me to create this splendiferous, albeit, supercilious sentence."
Now THAT'S what I'm talkin about.
WORD O' THE DAYFrom Dictionary.com: RAPSCALLION: a rascal. a rogue. a scamp. 2008/09/01 Back from the CoastWe recorded the vocals for HP's second project last weekend. It was a blast. The folks at Highland Park can SANG. They threw down, in a big way. There were some last minute changes which added some sparkle and wow to songs, and then there was much fruit from the hours that the HPians had spent planning and arranging and practicing. I'm very grateful that I get to be a part of this project. Recording is a wonderful, magical, inspiring process, and I feel very very thankful to God for the events of the past four days.
